Etymology
Înot is a deverbal noun built from a înota, "to swim". The verb traces back to Latin innatare, a compound of the prefix in- and natare, the frequentative form of nare, "to swim". Romanian kept the sense of moving through water almost unchanged from Latin, unlike some Romance sisters that shifted the base verb.
