Etymology
Romanian borrowed "dinozaur" from French "dinosaure" in the nineteenth or early twentieth century. The French word itself was built from two Greek elements coined by the British scientist Richard Owen in 1842. The compound literally means "terrible lizard," a name chosen for the huge fossil bones being unearthed at the time.
