Etymology
Întoarce comes from Latin intorquere, a combination of in- and torquere, meaning to twist or turn. The verb kept its core sense of turning through Romanian's development, and its reflexive form, a se întoarce, became the standard way to say to return. The same Latin root, without the prefix, gave Romanian a toarce, to spin thread, since spinning also involves twisting.
