Etymology
Jos comes from the Vulgar Latin adverb deorsum, meaning downward. Over time the initial syllables wore away and the remaining consonant softened into the sound Romanian now spells with j. The word has stayed in everyday use since Latin times, without ever becoming a noun or verb.
