Etymology

Își is the unstressed dative form of the Romanian third-person reflexive pronoun, placed right before a verb to show the action comes back to its own subject, as in își face ("does for himself"). It comes from Latin sibi, the dative of the reflexive pronoun se, with an initial î- added because Romanian does not like starting this kind of short pronoun cluster directly with s. The same î- pattern appears in îmi, îți, and îi, the other short pronoun forms that open a clause. The root -și is not related to the identically spelled conjunction și ("and"); the two are a coincidence of spelling, not shared history.
