Etymology
Aștept is the first person singular present of a aștepta, "to wait." The verb traces back to Vulgar Latin aspectare, a form built on spectare, "to watch, look at." Romanian regularly turns the Latin cluster sc before a front vowel into șt, the same shift seen in a crește (to grow, from crescere) and a naște (to be born, from nascere), which is how aspectare became aștepta.
