Etymology
The verb a adăuga descends from the Latin addaugere, a combination of the prefix ad- (toward, in addition) and augere (to increase, to make grow). Romanian kept the sense of augere almost intact: adding something is treated as making a thing grow larger. The same Latin root, without the prefix, gave rise to several common English words.
