Etymology
Romanian borrowed "alergic" from French "allergique" in the twentieth century, as part of the wave of Western European medical vocabulary that entered Romanian through French. The French term itself comes from German "allergisch," coined after the Austrian pediatrician Clemens von Pirquet introduced "Allergie" in 1906. Pirquet built the German word from Greek roots meaning "other" and "reaction" or "work." The Romanian adjective keeps the French shape but adapts it to native adjective endings.
