Romanian borrowed "aven" from French "aven," the standard speleological term for a natural vertical shaft in karst rock. French took the word from Occitan "avenc," used in the Cévennes region for the same kind of chasm. The Occitan word predates Latin in that area and is thought to come from a pre-Roman substrate, so no reliable Indo-European root has been traced for it.
