Amantă is the feminine form of amant, borrowed by Romanian from French amante in the nineteenth century, during a period when Romanian absorbed large amounts of French vocabulary. French amante itself descends from Latin amantem, the present participle of amare, meaning to love. The word entered Romanian alongside many other French-derived terms as the language modernized and shed some of its older Slavic-influenced vocabulary.
