Etymology
Lipsește is the third-person singular present of a lipsi, meaning to be missing or absent, or to lack something. Romanian took the verb from Bulgarian lipsva during centuries of shared Balkan life, not from Latin like most core vocabulary. Bulgarian had earlier borrowed it from Greek leípei, from the verb leípō, meaning to leave or fall short.
