Etymology
The word comes from "America", the continent named after the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci in the early 1500s. Romanian formed "american" by adding the suffix "-an", which marks origin or belonging, most likely borrowing the pattern directly from French "américain" or Italian "americano". Because "America" is a proper noun coined from a personal name, the word has no Indo-European root of its own.
