Etymology
Avocat entered Romanian from French avocat, which descends from Latin advocatus, the past participle of advocare, meaning "to call to one's aid." The Latin word originally named someone summoned to support a person in a legal matter, a sense that survives directly in the modern meaning of lawyer. Romanian borrowed the term as part of a wave of French legal and administrative vocabulary in the 19th century.
