Etymology

Amiază comes from a Vulgar Latin form built on medius, meaning 'middle', with the prefix ad- added to mark a point in time. The word originally pointed to the middle of the day, when the sun stands at its highest. The same Latin root gives Romanian miazăzi (south, literally 'midday direction') and miazănoapte (north, literally 'midnight direction'), since Romanians once oriented themselves by the sun's position at noon and midnight.
