Etymology
Romanian "dacă" formed inside the language itself, from the preposition "de" fused with the conjunction "că" (that). This sets it apart from most other Romance languages, where the word for "if" (Italian "se", French "si", Spanish "si") descends straight from Latin "si". Romanian kept "si" too in older texts, but "dacă" won out as the everyday conditional conjunction.
