Etymology
Apela entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as a learned borrowing from French appeler, part of a broad wave of French and Latin vocabulary that reshaped Romanian during that period. French appeler itself descends from Latin appellare, meaning to address or call upon, a compound of the prefix ad- (toward) and the verb pellere (to drive, to push). The same Latin root also gave Romanian the noun apel (a call, an appeal), from which the verb is directly formed.
