Etymology
Așteptă is the third-person simple past of a aștepta, "to wait." The verb descends from Latin exspectare, "to look out for, to await," itself built from ex- plus spectare, "to watch." Romanian kept the meaning almost unchanged across two thousand years, while the prefix ex- fused into the fossilized aș- that modern speakers no longer perceive as separate.
