Etymology
Romanian borrowed "autopsie" from French "autopsie" in the 19th century, as part of a wave of French medical and scientific vocabulary. The French word traces to Greek "autopsia", meaning seeing with one's own eyes. That Greek word joins "autos" (self) with "opsis" (sight, view). The original sense was general, direct personal observation, and only later narrowed to the medical meaning of examining a corpse.
