Etymology

Baschet entered Romanian as a loanword from French basket, itself a clipping of basket-ball, which French took directly from English. Romanian spelling swaps the English sk for sch to keep the hard k sound before the following e, following the same pattern seen in schi (from ski). The word names the sport itself, not the object it is played with.
