Beți is the masculine plural of the adjective beat, which means drunk. Beat comes from Latin bibitus, the past participle of bibere, to drink. Romanian also kept the verb itself as a bea, to drink, so the adjective and the verb share one Latin root. That root goes back to a very old Indo-European word for drinking.
