Etymology
Neplăcut is built from the negative prefix ne- and plăcut, the past participle of the verb a plăcea, "to please." A plăcea descends from Latin placere, the same verb behind English words like please and placid. Adding ne- simply reverses the meaning, turning "pleasing" into "not pleasing."
