Plămân descends from Latin pulmo, pulmonem, the standard word for lung. Popular Latin speech in the region that became Romania reshaped the consonants and added a nasal vowel, producing the modern form. The same Latin root gave French poumon, Italian polmone, and Spanish pulmón, and it survives in English through the learned borrowing pulmonary.
