Etymology
Manual comes from the Latin adjective manualis, meaning of the hand or held in the hand, itself from manus, hand. Romanian took the word through French manuel, and it kept both senses: a book you hold and consult, and something done by hand. The textbook sense won out as the word's everyday meaning in schools.
