Romanian dictionaries trace the verb to an unattested Vulgar Latin form built on quaerere, to seek or obtain, the same base that gave Latin quaestus, meaning profit or gain. The sound changes are heavy, so the word looks quite different from its Romance relatives, but the core sense of seeking and obtaining survives intact.
