Etymology
Muscă comes from Latin musca, meaning fly, which was inherited directly into Romanian along with most of the Romance vocabulary for everyday animals. Linguists trace musca back to a Proto-Indo-European root imitating the buzzing sound of small flying insects. The same root produced words for fly in several other Indo-European branches, so the word has stayed close to its ancient sense across thousands of years.
