Etymology
Sicriu entered Romanian from a Slavic form related to skrinja, meaning chest or box, which in turn traces back to the Latin word scrinium, a case for storing documents or valuables. In Romanian the word narrowed over time from a general chest or trunk to the specific box used to bury the dead. Today it means only coffin, with no trace of its old general sense left in everyday speech.
