Etymology
Romanian borrowed "calendar" from French "calendrier" and Latin "calendarium", a book of accounts kept according to the calends. "Calendarium" derives from "kalendae", the first day of the Roman month, when debts and interest were recorded. "Kalendae" in turn comes from the Latin verb "calare", meaning to call out or proclaim, since a priest would announce the new moon and the start of the month.
