Etymology
Cartier entered Romanian in the 19th century as a borrowing from French quartier, part of a wave of French vocabulary that reshaped Romanian civic and urban terminology. French quartier itself descends from Latin quartarius, a term for a fourth part, which came to mean a section of a city. So the modern sense of neighborhood grew out of the older idea of a city divided into quarters.
