Etymology
Romanian borrowed "interes" in the 19th century, during the modernization of its vocabulary, mainly from French "intérêt" with reinforcement from Latin "interesse". The Latin source is a compound of "inter" (among, between) and "esse" (to be), used impersonally to mean "it matters" or "it is important". Over time the abstract sense of mattering narrowed to the noun for curiosity, concern, or financial stake that Romanian uses today.
