Etymology
Hotărî is built on the noun hotar, meaning border or boundary, itself an old borrowing into Romanian from Hungarian határ. The verb was formed by adding the fourth-conjugation ending -î to this root. The sense shifted from the concrete act of fixing a boundary to the abstract act of fixing a decision, much as English speakers say someone has drawn a line on an issue.
