Etymology
Cătră is an older and regional spelling of the standard Romanian preposition către, meaning toward. Romanian linguists trace it to Latin contra, which originally meant against but softened over time to a simple sense of direction. Romanian later re-borrowed the same Latin word as contra, keeping the original adversative meaning, so the two forms exist side by side with different senses. Cătră itself is common in older printed texts, church books, and rural speech, especially in Moldova.
