Etymology
Contrar comes from Latin contrarius, meaning opposite or opposed. It entered Romanian as a learned borrowing during the nineteenth century, when Romanian scholars deliberately re-Latinized the language's vocabulary. It stands alongside the older, inherited preposition contra, from the same Latin root.
