Etymology

Certăm comes from the Latin verb certare, meaning to contend, compete, or struggle to settle a matter. Romanian kept the sense of contention and narrowed it two ways: a certa on its own means to scold someone, while the reflexive a se certa means to quarrel with someone. Certare itself derives from certus, decided or settled, the past participle of cernere, to sift or discern.
