"Lunetă" was borrowed from French "lunette," a diminutive of "lune" (moon), originally used for round or crescent-shaped lenses and later for a rifle's telescopic sight. French "lune" descends from Latin "luna," moon. So a "lunetist" is literally "the person of the scope."
