Etymology
Cavaler entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as part of a wave of French and Italian borrowings that reshaped the modern literary vocabulary. It traces to French cavalier and Italian cavaliere, both descending from Latin caballarius, meaning horseman, itself built on caballus, a Latin word for horse. The word displaced or sat alongside older native terms and kept both its literal sense, an armored horseman of the medieval nobility, and a figurative one, a man who acts with courtesy and honor.
