Etymology

Miște is the third-person present subjunctive of the verb a mișca, to move. Its final -e is a grammatical ending, not part of the root, and it triggers a regular Romanian sound shift in which sc turns into șt before a front vowel. The verb a mișca itself has a disputed origin, and dictionaries do not agree on a single source, so no ancestor root is given here.
