Etymology

Romanian borrowed cravată from French cravate in the nineteenth century, part of a large wave of French loanwords that reshaped Romanian vocabulary. The French word itself goes back to Croate, meaning Croatian. Croatian mercenaries serving in France in the seventeenth century wore a knotted neckcloth that caught the eye of the French court, and the garment took the name of the people who wore it.
