Etymology

Vindecă is the third-person present form of a vindeca, from Latin vindicare, which meant to lay legal claim to something or to avenge a wrong. Romanian took a different path from its Romance siblings: instead of keeping the sense of vengeance, it shifted to the idea of setting something right by curing it. French venger, Italian vendicare, and Spanish vengar all kept the older meaning of avenging.
