Etymology
Cuvânt comes from Latin conventum, the past participle of convenire, meaning to come together or to agree. In most Romance languages the word for "word" comes from Latin verbum, but in the region that became Romania the sense shifted from "agreement" to "speech" and then to "word." The same Latin verb also gave Romanian a se cuveni, to be fitting or proper, a separate branch of meaning from the same root.
