Etymology

Damă entered Romanian from French dame, which descends from Latin domina, meaning mistress of the house or lady of rank. The word arrived relatively late, alongside other French-influenced vocabulary of the 19th century, so it carries a bookish, imported flavor next to the older native word doamnă, which came from the same Latin root through direct inheritance. From the base sense of a well-born woman, Romanian extended damă to the queen in playing cards and to a piece in the board game dame, both borrowed alongside the games themselves.
