Etymology

Torturat is the past participle of a tortura, to torture. The verb entered Romanian in the modern era alongside the noun tortură, both borrowed from French during the wave of Latin-based vocabulary that reshaped Romanian in the 19th century. French torturer itself descends from Latin torquere, to twist, by way of the noun tortura, twisting or torment. The Romanian participle simply adds the regular first-conjugation ending -at.
