Etymology

Deșert entered Romanian through French désert, which traces back to Latin desertum, the neuter past participle of deserere, meaning to abandon or leave unjoined. The Latin verb combines the prefix de- (away) with serere (to join, to put in a row), so the underlying sense is land left disconnected or forsaken. The word later narrowed in everyday use to mean an arid, barren region.
