Etymology

Economie entered Romanian from French économie, which traces back through Latin oeconomia to Greek oikonomia. The Greek word combined oikos, meaning house or household, with nomos, meaning law or management. Its original sense was the running of a household, later widened to cover the management of a state's or the world's resources.
