Romanian borrowed "tatuaj" from French "tatouage" in the 19th or 20th century, part of a wave of French loanwords that modernized Romanian vocabulary. The French word itself derives from "tatouer" (to tattoo), which came from the Polynesian term "tatau", brought to Europe by explorers who encountered the practice in Tahiti and other Pacific islands. The word entered European languages independently of any older Indo-European root.
