Etymology

Imperiu is a learned borrowing from Latin imperium, meaning command or supreme authority, and by extension the territory ruled under that authority. Romanian took the word directly from Latin (or through French empire and Italian impero) during the 19th-century modernization of its vocabulary, alongside many other Latinate political and scientific terms. The native, orally inherited word for the ruler himself, împărat, entered Romanian much earlier by a different route.
