Demult is a Romanian-internal compound of the preposition de (from Latin de) and mult (from Latin multus, meaning much or many). The combination once meant something close to of much time, and this shifted over time to the temporal sense long ago or for a long time now. It has no single-word ancestor in Latin; it formed inside Romanian from pieces that were already there.
