Sinucide is a reflexive verb built from two native elements: sine, the reflexive root meaning self (from Latin se/sui), and ucide, meaning to kill (from Latin occidere, to strike down). Unlike French or English, which borrowed the Latin noun suicidium directly as suicide, Romanian coined its own verb in the 19th century by joining these two existing words. The result is a transparent compound: literally, to self-kill.
