Etymology

Romanian borrowed "desert" directly from French "dessert" in the 19th century, during a period when Romanian absorbed many French words for food, fashion, and city life. The French word comes from "desservir," meaning to clear the table, itself built from "des-" (undoing) plus "servir" (to serve). So a dessert is literally the course served after the table has been cleared of the main meal. This word is unrelated to the Romanian word for the arid landscape, which is spelled "deșert" with a diacritic and has a separate Latin origin.
