Etymology
Angajat is the past participle of a angaja, a verb Romanian borrowed from French engager during the nineteenth-century modernization of its vocabulary. French engager comes from en- plus gage, meaning a pledge, a word that reached French through Frankish. The underlying idea is of someone bound or pledged to a task, which is how the word settled into meaning hired or employed.
