Etymology
Romanian borrowed "robot" directly, like most European languages, from Czech playwright Karel Čapek's 1920 play R.U.R., which coined the term for artificial workers. Čapek built it on Czech "robota," meaning forced labor or drudgery. That word traces back to a Slavic root for servitude, itself rooted in an old Indo-European word for someone stripped of free status. The word entered Romanian in the 20th century essentially unchanged, alongside the same borrowing in English, French, and German.
